The Way to Redemption for a Lost Soul: The Case Study of a Basketball Player's Self-Awakening Process
Abstract:"Xiao Zhan" (pseudonym), a basketball player who once participated in the High School Basketball League, the University Basketball League, the Super Basketball League, and the national team, was caught up in an extramarital affair scandal. He then kept searching for his role and value during a period of being a "lost soul". The purpose of this study is to understand and analyze the process of self-awakening and self-transformation in Xiao Zhan. It adopts a case study approach, collecting data through in-depth interviews and relevant documents to reconstruct the lived experience and its interpretations. The results show that Xiao Zhan, who once held a significant position in the basketball world, faced conflicts, fears, and pressures. These challenges led to frustrations in his basketball career, personal life, and family relationships. Consequently, he wasted his talents, lost opportunities, and placed his trust in solutions that ultimately offered no help to him. However, after a period of silence in his life, Xiao Zhan started anew. He relied on family support and personal determination for self-awakening, constantly reminding himself of his core beliefs and adhering to them. Eventually, he returned to the basketball court. In conclusion, for athletes who have experienced role conflicts, mistakes, and frustrations, the negative dynamics may seem to cause a permanent blot at the time. However, as is observed in this case, a new meaning of life comes from deep reflection, letting go of past turmoil, embracing a determination to find self-awakening and self-transformation.
