Integrating the Feldenkrais Method Into College Exercise and Fitness Courses From a Somatic Perspective
Abstract:Enhancing the quality of a healthy lifestyle and cultivating physical literacy for lifelong physical activity are crucial issues in contemporary physical education. Given that health behaviors during college significantly impact future lifestyle development, more research is needed to enhance pedagogical practices and explore the design of physical education courses that enable students to enjoy the pleasure and satisfaction of physical activity. The purpose of this article is to emphasize the somatic approaches of body awareness and understand the physical and mental health benefits of the Feldenkrais method for participants, so as to provide a reference for future planning of integrating physical and somatic approaches into exercise and fitness courses. It employs a search for empirical journal articles on the Feldenkrais method from 2014 to 2023 in Airiti Library and PubMed databases. Recent empirical research has targeted mostly older adults and people with different chronic physical conditions (such as back pain, shoulder and neck pain, Parkinson's disease, visual impairments, etc.) Research has found that the Feldenkrais method improved participants' quality of life, self-awareness, cognitive function, functional movements, balance, etc. However, there were few empirical research studies on the intervention of the Feldenkrais method in college exercise and fitness courses. This article suggests that in the future, in terms of teaching and research, while integrating the Feldenkrais method into exercise and fitness courses from a somatic perspective, smart wearable devices can be used to collect research data, and research designs such as counterbalance and randomized control trials can be used to explore the benefits to college students.
